We believe that nonprofits exist to solve problems, but we need to disrupt the industry to do it.

Our mission is to help disrupt the nonprofit sector by helping nonprofit leaders build highly effective programs and organizations that create real change.

Nonprofit organizations fill a critical need, but they need to work better. Together, we've spent decades in the nonprofit sector. We

came together because nonprofit systems are broken. Like everyone who enters the nonprofit world, we are passionate about making a difference, but time after time, we saw organizations that just weren't up to the task. Broken systems failed their staff and their missions over and over again. After decades fighting these systems from the inside, we got tired of being pissed about it and decided to try to do something about it. Square Root was born from that anger. A place to challenge norms and build a community of leaders committed to a new kind of nonprofit management.

Our values drive everything from the way we work with clients to our vision for the industry.

We believe in knowing who you are, as a person and as an organization.

We are curious, and we leverage that curiosity in service of you and your mission.

We drive for change, but we believe in innovating with integrity.

We are bold; we push for what we think is right, even when it's hard.

We know that this work personal and emotional, and we are committed to meeting you where you are.

It started with a group of women who kept finding their way back to each other. Friends and colleagues, we had a shared vision and a deep trust in one another. Taking a play out of Brené Brown’s book “Dare to Lead," we dubbed ourselves a Square Squad. According to Brené Brown:

Your square squad is the very short list of people whose opinions matter. These are the people who care enough about you to be honest, rather than telling you what you want to hear. They should not be people who just blindly agree with you no matter what. People on your list love you not despite your vulnerability and imperfections, but because of them. They will point out when you are out of your integrity or when you have messed up, and they will support you to fix things.

From within these four walls of safety, we realized we had something more, and that we wanted something more. When it came time to build a business and find a name, we realized we couldn't just stay Square Squad forever, as we had taken to calling ourselves. As we brainstormed, themes emerged around getting to the root of the issues that plague the nonprofit sector. We had a Square Squad wanting to cut through to the root, and just like that, Square Root was born.

Our logo was designed by our very first client, Mark Fairbanks of Islands of Brilliance. He described the concept to us as "the structure that emerges from a deep, organic process."

Islands of Brilliance (IOB) is a design learning experience developed specifically for children and young adults on the autism spectrum. During a typical design workshop, students and mentors work on a project from initial sketches through building it using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Brilliant Studios, the social enterprise arm of IOB, provides young adults the opportunity to apprentice as designers at their in-house design firm. Interested in partnering? Contact IOB here.
